Kauser Kabealo came to study Engineering in the United States in 1993. In less than twenty years, her small business won a three-year, four-million dollar prime contract to supply all IT engineering support services to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Study in the States Program (SEVP).
Kauser created the business model for Development Consultants Incorporated (DCI) in the Nuclear Physics Theory Laboratory at the Ohio State University. Virtually every physicist in the group was working as an Information Technology consultant, typically making less than half of the contracting company bill rate. Kauser created DCI to turn the table in favor of IT customers and workers. DCI increases employee compensation proportionate to their skill, professionalism, and work ethic while providing customers exceptional talent and value.
The plan worked. DCI has accumulated a wealth of talent to become an engineering powerhouse responsible for the technology behind some of the most recognizable brands and government agencies in the world. You have likely experienced DCI’s work without even realizing it. In the private sector, DCI has provided cloud and professional services to Autodesk, Bath and Body Works, Bush Beans, CVS Pharmacies, Crock-Pot, Gillette, Kohl’s, Honda of America Manufacturing, Propel, Select Comfort, Sherwin-Williams, Victoria’s Secret, Victoria’s Secret Pink, and Victoria’s Secret Sport. In the public sector, DCI successfully concluded the DHS Study in the States three year prime contract in September of 2016 and was awarded another Federal prime contract by the Department of Defense to provide Information Technology professional services to the Ohio Army National Guard.
Kauser summarizes her business model in the following way, “DCI attracts mature, disciplined, dedicated technologists who are truly eager to demonstrate talent, effort, and professionalism commensurate with generous compensation. Although our gross margin is less than half of most big IT companies, we have been financially sound, debt free, and consistently profitable for over fifteen years. Above all else, DCI is a customer service business and our customers are consistently thrilled with the quality of our work, integrity of our employees, and the cost savings that we deliver.”
